ResistingWomen.Net is very proud to reproduce here below a major, useful analysis on recent United Nations Security Council Resolution condemning sexual violence as a war crime and a component of genocide (UNSCR 1820, June 19, 2008) and to add some more links to other converging analyses. According to the author below, "this resolution is not about promoting women’s rights. It is about governments recognizing - at least in theory - that systematic sexual violence undermines not just women’s rights but governments’ own security interests" and could even be formally a step backward. > continue

Fourteen activists from the organisation Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), including WOZA leaders Jenni Williams and Magadonga Mahlangu, were arrested on 28 May and are still being held under harsh prison conditions, as begins today the Eleventh Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government from 30 June to 1st July 2008, in Sharm El-Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt. The Zimbabwean crisis will be a major topic during the Summit.
